Graduate Minor

The Department of Asian American Studies offers an interdisciplinary graduate minor. The minor is designed to complement the graduate work in the student's area of concentration.

Admission

Students must be in good academic standing in a graduate or professional program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and demonstrate an interest in Asian American Studies. In order to apply, graduate students need to meet with the Head of Asian American Studies, Junaid Rana, and complete a Curriculum Change/ Transfer of Credit Request with the Graduate College.

This form will need to be signed by the graduate student’s home department and then by the Associate Head of Asian American Studies. The graduate student then needs to file this form with the Graduate College.

Requirements

Required Courses

4 Hours  - AAS 501 or AAS 561

4 Hours - AAS 590

8 Hours - Two graduate courses from an approved list of Asian American Studies courses at either the 400 or 500 level.

Total Hours: 16

 

In addition to the minor requirements, students must also complete the requirements of their major degree. Only 4 hours of course credit can be cross-listed with the students’ disciplinary unit. Please contact your department for more information.

For the Graduate Minor in Asian American Studies to appear on the academic transcript, the student must successfully petition the Graduate College to add the Graduate Minor in Asian American Studies to their academic records. Please refer to the Graduate College Handbook for details.
